2011 Ad Person of the Year: Paul Venables

February 28, 2011 — On Saturday, Paul Venables, founder and executive creative director of independent San Francisco ad agency Venables Bell & Partners (VB&P), accepted “The Ad Person of the Year” honors. Presented annually by the Greater San Francisco Ad Club, the award is given to an outstanding person each year in recognition of their accomplishments and unique service to the San Francisco ad community.

 Jerry Gibbons, an advertising legend and past recipient, announced the award, citing Venables’ many accomplishments including the strength and longevity of his ad agency Venables Bell & Partners, which he founded in 2001. The agency has a client roster that includes Audi of America, Intel, Barclays, The Meth Project, ConAgra Foods and ConocoPhillips. In 2010, Advertising Age named VB&P to its “A-List” of top ten agencies in the country. Prior to opening VB&P in 2001, Venables was co-creative director, associate partner and heir apparent of Goodby Silverstein & Partners.

 In presenting the award, Gibbons read testimonials from past recipients Jeff Goodby, co-chairman and creative director of Goodby Silverstein & Partners, and Tom Bedecarre, CEO of AKQA, which praised Venables for bringing major accounts to the San Francisco Bay area and for the nationally acclaimed, award winning advertising the agency produces.

 “Paul would be among the very smallest group – of the best creative people – ever to pass through here. He had a way of making clients love him, coming up with the best imaginable work, and still combining a lovability that makes him a great leader of the next generation of creative work in this city,” said Jeff Goodby in remarks about Paul’s accomplishments. “Everything he has done since he left Goodby Silverstein & Partners has only made us more sure of all of this.”
